Parasite & Disease Prevention

Introduction: Philosophy of Prevention

At Angrboda Bandogs, prevention isn’t a product — it’s a system.
We don’t medicate blindly or chase quick fixes. Instead, we rely on routine monitoring, biosecurity, and early intervention to maintain the health of our dogs and the safety of our puppies.

Parasite and disease prevention begins long before symptoms ever appear. By keeping our environment clean, our nutrition balanced, and our testing consistent, we’re able to intercept issues immediately — protecting both the dogs here and the families who will eventually bring our puppies home.

Our approach can be summed up in three words: observe, test, act.

Internal Parasite Managemen

We believe in testing, not guessing. Every dog is routinely screened using in-house fecal floats and smears under our microscope to detect intestinal parasites long before they become a problem.

Why This Matters:

Over-deworming damages the gut microbiome and contributes to drug resistance — an increasingly serious issue in the canine world. Rather than administering chemicals on a schedule “just in case,” we base every treatment on evidence.

Our Process:

  • Fecal Floats: Identify eggs of roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, coccidia, and giardia.

  • Fecal Smears: Detect early bacterial or protozoal imbalances.

  • Targeted Deworming: We treat only when necessary, using appropriate medications and rotating actives as needed.

  • Follow-Up Testing: Post-treatment tests confirm the parasite cycle is fully broken.

This precision approach keeps our dogs’ digestive tracts healthy, our parasite load low, and our medications effective for when they’re truly needed.

External Parasite Control (Fleas, Ticks, and Mites)

Fleas and ticks are not only irritants — they carry dangerous diseases like Lyme, anaplasmosis, and ehrlichiosis.
We maintain a multi-layered defense combining environmental management, targeted prevention, and constant observation.

Our Routine:

  • Regular yard treatment using pet-safe natural repellents during high-risk months

  • Frequent coat inspections and brushing

  • Clean bedding and sanitized kennels

  • Minimal chemical exposure — prescription preventatives are used only as needed, not constantly

  • Natural aids such as diatomaceous earth, apple cider vinegar rinses, or diluted essential oils for coat care and repellent support

Because our dogs live and work outdoors, we focus on real-world management, not sterile overprotection. The goal is to maintain a clean, balanced environment where immunity is strong and parasites can’t take hold.

Vaccination & Immune Health

Vaccines are a vital tool — but only when used correctly. We follow a measured, evidence-based vaccination schedule, balancing disease prevention with immune system maturity.

Our Core Principles:

  • Maternal Antibody Awareness: Puppies retain antibodies from their mother for several weeks; vaccinating too early can render vaccines ineffective.

  • Spaced Timing: Core vaccines (Distemper, Parvo, Adenovirus, Parainfluenza, and Rabies) are administered on a staggered schedule to minimize immune stress.

  • Avoiding Over-Vaccination: We do not repeatedly vaccinate adult dogs without reason. Booster decisions are based on age, environment, and risk.

  • Puppy Safety: Unvaccinated puppies are kept in controlled areas until their immune systems are mature enough for safe exposure.

We also focus on natural immune support through diet, gut health, and stress management — the true foundation of disease resistance.

Sanitation & Biosecurity Protocols

Disease control starts with environment control. Our sanitation routines are methodical and consistent — not just when litters are on the ground, but every single day.

Daily and Weekly Routines:

  • Kennels & Whelping Areas: Cleaned and disinfected daily with veterinary-grade, non-toxic solutions.

  • Bedding & Bowls: Washed, rotated, and sanitized regularly.

  • Waste Removal: Immediate and frequent, preventing contamination or parasite cycles.

  • Footwear Protocols: Designated kennel-only footwear and disinfectant mats prevent outside pathogens from entering.

  • Water Sources: Fresh, filtered water provided daily; troughs and bowls cleaned routinely to prevent biofilm buildup.

Quarantine & Re-Entry Procedures

Any dog returning from outside environments — whether for breeding, shows, or training — undergoes a mandatory quarantine period before rejoining the pack.

During Quarantine:

  • Dogs are kept in separate, sanitized areas for observation.

  • Fecal testing and physical checks are performed.

  • Baths, ear cleaning, and nail trimming occur before reintroduction.

  • Bedding and feeding utensils are kept separate until cleared.

This reduces the risk of introducing kennel cough, giardia, coccidia, or parvovirus — diseases that can spread quickly but are easily prevented through diligence.

The Balance Between Protection and Exposure

A sterile life is not a healthy life. Controlled exposure is how the immune system learns to respond effectively. Our dogs are raised in a balanced environment — clean, structured, but not over-sanitized.

They experience natural environmental stimuli — dirt, grass, water, sunlight — building true immunity rather than chemical dependency.
The result is hardy, resilient dogs who can thrive in real-world conditions without constant medical intervention.

Why It Matters

Parasite and disease prevention is more than maintenance — it’s a reflection of responsibility. Every measure we take protects not only our adult dogs but the puppies who depend on them for antibodies, nutrition, and safety.

Healthy dogs are confident, capable, and fertile. Healthy puppies are stronger, smarter, and more adaptable.

By maintaining strict preventive protocols, we ensure that every dog bred, raised, and placed through Angrboda Bandogs carries the strength, health, and resilience that define our name.
